A year after...MLA graduation

As of May of 2010 - No permanent job position for me.
However, lots of landscape design experience.

I have to say that it has been a bumpy ride since many of us achieved a master's degree in landscape architecture in 2009. As this blog shows, I have not have the time to time write blogs at all. Instead, like millions of individuals, the focus has been on finding jobs and helping other people cope with the global economic downturn.

What type of survival mechanisms recent MLAs should consider?

- Keeping in contact with classmates
- Plenty of rest (sleep please)
- Catch up with family members
- Keep networking (learn how networking works)
- Keep searching for tips and advise on making your resume stand-out
- Keep working in areas related to landscape architecture in order to get as much experience as possible. (don't let your portfolio stop - keep adding material)
- Consider part-time work and volunteering)
- Get involved with the local ASLA chapter
- Get involved with local landscape architecture college or school
- Call companies around. Ask: when do you think you may consider rehiring. (write it
down & keep track along with contact information. Provide a thank you note(s))
- Advocate the LA profession (After graduating, most people I talked to don't know wat
landscape architects do - still)
- Can you provide some sort of mentor support?
- Understand the national & local economic development trends
- Attend local workshops and educative presentations, which will keep you professionally informed.
- Explore the potential of networking and finding jobs through Tweeter.
- If you have a smart phone (search for job apps) Example: Job Radio
- Get weekly job search results (ex. SimplyHired.com)
- Consider paid internships
- Try connecting with hiring managers
- Target the company/institution you want to work for

In my case, I have encounter some family difficulties on top of the economic mess the USA is involved in. I have been turning a few jobs down. But, for the rest of you...continue the positive attitude. Searching for jobs can be a lonely place, don't give up for anything.

Next blog is in July of 2010.
